Pros

The other field engineers I work with. Great training. Free food sometimes.

Cons

I'm sorry but I would definitely be wary of these reviews. It's just interesting that when I started at Hensel Phelps about 2 years ago, they were slammed in bad reviews and had 2.5 stars. The upper management noticed that they had bad reviews on here and now they magically have 4.1 stars... Something seems fishy! But I honestly should have never took a job here. I feel they do not treat you with respect, you will work insanely long hours (12-17hrs including working on weekends which are unpaid, might I add) and based on my experience will work in a verbally hostile environment. I don't feel upper management, except for maybe 1-2, care about you as a person and your success at this company. I know I'm not the only one on my project who felt this way because there has been 5 people who have quit already. If you're decided between two company's, do yourself a favor and do not go with Hensel Phelps.

We appreciate your thoughts and the time you took to write your review. You’ve indicated the training was great and we hope it helps you in your future endeavors. You are correct in saying that construction will typically call for long hours, as this is something the industry demands and work hours vary from project to project. Within each project there are “crunch” times when all employees are required to work the hours necessary to meet deadlines. The Field Engineer position has a great deal of responsibility and is not for everyone. Some individuals find that it is too much for them, but others navigate it well and go on to have a very successful and gratifying career. We encourage employees to take ownership in the management of their time by clearly communicating with their managers and co-workers to discuss difficult times and frustrations. We were excited to see that our ratings went up, although our initial intent of partnering with Glassdoor was to manage how our company is externally viewed on its site and not to necessarily increase our “stars”. Being able to let our employees know of this partnership and encouraging them to submit their feedback allowed for all employees to comment; thus increasing our rating.

Pros

Employee owned company. Good benefits once (if) you reach the project engineer level. Until you reach the project engineer level, pay and benefits are just so-so. Great 401k contribution.

Cons

This is a good ol' boys club. If you're a women, you will not be promoted as quickly, or at all. Women are treated with respect to their face, but your growth within the company will be stagnant. Favoritism is a big problem - if you know the right people, you will be protected and promoted quickly. Hensel Phelps is looking for type A personalities - a more easy going, laid back, thoughtful, helpful personality is not seen as valuable. Hours are long, weekend work is expected. Good luck if you have a family and want to spend time with them. Little interaction from project management, there is a sink or swim mentality. Lots of young and inexperienced superintendents; all the knowledgeable, experienced superintendents are leaving or retiring.

We thank you for your candid review and are disappointed that someone at Hensel Phelps might have this perspective. According to NAWIC, in 2017, women made up only 13% of the construction sector workforce and only 2% of those workers are on-site. At Hensel Phelps, 15.6% of our employees are female. Our Code of Conduct and EEOC training are required for all employees on an annual basis and are to be enforced at the job sites. We are aware that not all personalities mesh well and sometimes working through problems with co-workers can test one’s resolve. However, we encourage you to talk to other females in management (Project Managers, Superintendents, and Operations Managers) to obtain feedback and guidance about managing your career and advise you about whether the difficulties you are facing have to do with the industry or are specific to your situation. We also encourage participation in the Hensel Phelps WNET (Women’s Network), a collaborative and supportive group that is meant to empower women within the company. We strongly suggest you consider scheduling a discussion with your supervisor and/or other individuals you fully trust to share these strong feelings and to put positive energy toward a solution!
