Pros

Customers are great and it was nice to work in a crafting environment.

Cons

District management and up all treat the store employees like they are not human. Store managers do not last more then 2.5 years - they all get fired. Hours given to employes are based on sales. It does not matter that you have 50 hours or resetting to do. If your sales are low they expect you to do it 20 because they can't spare the extra money to pay someone to help you. District managers come in and grade you on if the store is stocked. They pick x amount of items and if you are out of the item you flunk. It does not matter that someone may have bought all 3 that you keep in stock yesterday - it is considered a fail. The pay is so low that a mom of 2 who had been working there full time for 10 years still qualified for food stamps. There are no advancement opportunities.

I like this job only marginally more than I like being homeless.

Pros

Good pay and good hours, yet still not good enough to compensate for all the cons.

Cons

TERRIBLE management that belittles employees constantly, are extremely rude/disrespectful, show blatant favoritism, and overall create an extremely aggressive and competitive work environment. Many times I have felt singled out and scolded by management for ridiculous things, while other employees get away with murder. Most of the work is tedious and overwhelming. "Part time" employees are working 40+ hour weeks, but getting paid near minimum wage, while management is getting paid 14+ for working MAYBE 20-30 hours a week. Managers have unrealistic time allotments when it comes to getting things done... I've never had such demanding managers. Managers under-appreciate all of their 'lower-level' employees, most good work gets overlooked. Superiors here like to sweep things under the rug and are skirting the laws constantly. Our store manager doesn't ever seem to do ANYTHING productive - takes smoke breaks almost every hour, sits in his office, stands around and watches things, makes suggestions, repeat. Coworkers are just waiting for you to slip up, they act like vultures. Most try to take advantage of you. Very gossipy, very competitive, very rude people. Technology is outdated. Forever dealing with long lines and angry customers because of the way we are forced to ring up customers or run price checks. We even had a few incidents where we were running our entire system on dial up? ....Why? Just why? In addition to this, learning the new sales every week is flat out exhausting to keep up with. Customers themselves are rude and impatient (due to long lines) and feel the need to discuss their political views or "ideas" for improving the company to anyone who will listen. Customers are constantly arguing with cashiers over what is, or is not on sale. I have had customers throw things at me, scream at me, etc. etc. While management just stands back and tries to pacify them. The marked up prices are ridiculous. There are no true sale items. Everything is cheaply made, and overpriced, then marked half off. I feel like a total fraud when people tell me they are glad they got such a deal. I personally do not agree with their religious views. While I am tolerant, they are not. The CEO has religious posters and scripture plastered all over the break room. Management has invited others to pray with them before store opening (while on the clock), in work areas. Constantly discussing their religion (and/or political views) and looking down on those that don't lead a similar lifestyle. Flat out wrong. I believe work should be a secular place.
