Pros

In my two summers of working for HCI, i've had very supportive bosses and great coworkers. The management goes out of their way to make sure you can accomplish your job as safely as possible and are flexible with schedules.

Cons

This job is physically demanding and requires 9-12 hours of non-stop movement. The only rest you get is when you're driving in between deliveries. This job is commissioned based so depending on how hot the day is (the hotter the weather, the more ice you sell) and the location of your route, you may not make a lot of money.

Pros

The work is quite strenuous and demanding, but I enjoyed it because it was full of incentives. The harder you work, the more money you make.

Cons

Easy to get in wrecks. You have to follow the guide of a manager who doesn't know what he's doing. The best routes are given to preferred employees.

Pros

Free ice, flexibility, good way to get delivery experience if you want to use it to springboard you to a better job.

Cons

Expected to work long hours for low pay when compared to other delivery jobs. Only payed for delivering ice and none of the other jobs you are expected to do for free such as defrosting boxes and cleaning up the numerous broken bags of ice that pile up in the back of the truck. Expected to drive sometimes 200 miles a day while not getting payed a cent for time driven. Commission rate was lowered but nobody was told about it, but it doesn't matter because nobody is told how they are payed in the first place even when they ask management directly. The dolly's that you use are terrible. You are expected to push 500 pounds of ice with dolly with one working wheel. The lift gates on the back of the trucks are ridiculously slanted and very dangerous but it doesn't matter to management as long as you get the job done. Start work at 7 AM, and they try to make you finish delivering by 5 PM but they don't consider the fact that you will be driving an ice truck 50 miles during rush hour while still having to clean out your truck and do other end of day requirements so you end up working until 7. You end up working at least 60 hours a week but get no overtime pay because it is commission based.
