Pros

One of the great things about working at Hughes was that I was able to incrementally work my way up from a very low level to being a higher technical job in one of the engineering groups. There were some frustrations that made me leave, but in the end Hughes gave me a good start. It was a good part of my life when I needed it, and is something I'll always look back on with fondness as part of the good ole days.

Cons

The downside of working in ops was that it seemed we often ran out of parts to the extent that it affected production and operations. The people that could make a difference didn't care to fix the problems. This was my biggest frustration about working in ops (caring about getting the job done well, but not getting sufficient planning and operational support to follow through). By the time I was in engineering, the principal frustration was getting circuit boards repaired and spare parts to support my engineering staff. I was told that it was because the electronics techs were so backed up with work. This was my single biggest frustration working in the engineering group; again though this pointed back to operations, and not engineering. I believe ops is now under a new manager though so hopefully things have improved. In engineering, I remember we had a CM person that seemed incompetent, and I was left wondering how she got a job that put me lower than her on the totem pole. However, over time I've come to realize this scenario is repeated in many workplaces for many people. Overall though, the engineering grunts that I worked with were a close knit bunch, intelligent, and hardworking. I left, because of a few frustrations mentioned here, but also largely because given the market conditions at the time, I could do better elsewhere.

Pros

Hughes work/life balance is pretty exceptional. It has to be the most lax place I have ever worked, casual atmosphere, few people keep strict tabs, etc. If your child gets ill or needs to be picked up, no problem, "See you when I see you, or Go take care of business", whch does count for a lot. In addition, benefits are better than many I have seen, although have been pared down as of late.

Cons

There appears to be absolutley no interest in the employee from middle (perhaps Sr.) Management in developing an employee's career. The same can be said with regard to HR for employees in general. Professional development is effectively a pipe dream. Whatever spot you may come in to fill, you are destined to remain there seemingly for eternity, no matter your professional merits. You are more or less a slot filler, and treated as such. There are quite a few "maintainers" who work here, knowing full well their careers are not & will not go anywhere. These folks are however, seemingly content because of the lax environment and relative freedom the environmernt provides. Middle Managment is a complete and total joke.

Pros

Great environment thats more like a university than a work place. Some of the smartest people I have worked with are at Hughes and I was proud to be a part of the company. Its recognizes its people for the value they bring to the company and puts them on a promotion path to reward them. Hughes always pushes to the edge of what has been the typical solution on any technical project they are working on and as a result are often way out in front of similar companies. Pradman Kaul he has a firm hand on the rudder of the ship and a strong team around him and that is reflected in the success of the company.

Cons

It has gone through a lot of changes in recent times and has been sold twice in the past 5 years. With Apollo now the owners and the fact that they take an active part in the business it has smoothed out. However companies like Apollo buy, invest and sell the companies the purchase so more change must be on the cards for the future. However that should not be a deciding factor in a company with great opportunities for engineers.
