Pros

1. Kudos to Hughes CEO for not laying off a single employee during stressful financial times during the pandemic. Job safety here is second to none! 2. HR dept. has taken steps and started new ways to engage employees which are steps in the right direction so kudos to the hardworking HR team as well!

Cons

1. Absence of appreciation. You would be working on wages that are much lower compared to the market standard. Raises/awards/promotions are mostly given to managers themselves. In my 4 years at Hughes, not a single award came my way but saw my managers get at least 1 in every award function. Software delivery group is full of managers who are happy to take all the awards and benefits and keep it to themselves rather than sharing the same with their team. For that reason, bright young individuals join Hughes and then quickly change jobs 2. Inner politics amongst the SDG dominates the way every decision is made. Questioning your managers is not appreciated . You will be successful if you're a YesMan/YesWoman. 3. Majority of the tech used is outdated because employee job safety is paramount. Since the show is run by senior managers, folks are happy to stick to what they know. 4. New technologies such as Salesforce is used by Hughes but everything is outsourced and the entire development is done offshore. Roles in the Germantown office are for documentation and testing only. 5. Most of your time is spent attending meetings and calls rather than building things. Classic case of all talks and no actions (every action is then outsourced and done by "Consulting Partners")

Pros

Not much to write about here

Cons

I worked in the RF hardware team. Its led by some of the most incompetent and rude people I have encountered in this industry. My manager was terrible at management and extremely uncivil. There was always an attempt to set up team members against each other. HR would kowtow to senior management. They would keep tabs on when someone came in and left and report it to their bosses. Its almost like being in prison. The pay is abysmal for the level of effort expected. OT is almost always the norm. Sick leave is limited. PTO days off every year is low as well with no shutdown. There was no concept of WFH, atleast until 2017. The work could be challenging but can also be drab based on what the team thinks financials look like. There were days when EDA tools (software tools) would have expired licenses and then it was upto you to figure out what to do next and "contribute". There was also a tendency to either use open source or textbook designs rather than innovate and understand limitations. Very old school conservative environment. And as I see it, Viasat is the future especially with its focus on R&D and its employee happiness. Overall, terrible squalid place to work and would definitely not recommend.
