Pros

1. Coworkers are very friendly. 2. You are helping students improve their school subject skills and ACT scores. 3. Job of helping students makes you feel good about yourself. 4. Job is good experience for people who want to pursue a career in teaching.

Cons

1. Only part-time positions are available, meaning there are no benefits. 2. Students do not always show up, which can be very frustrating if you have to drive far. They are also not held accountable for this even if the reasons for not showing up are illegitimate. 3. Very few hours, especially around holidays and ACT/SAT test weekends. 4. No direct-deposit system. You get a paper paycheck that you have to take to the bank yourself.

Pros

As an SAT tutor I had the opportunity to work one on one with students. Huntington has a unique program and we all truly had a vested interest in the success of each student.

Cons

The salary is not anywhere near the salary you can earn as a private tutor.

Pros

Hours are flexible. They will work around your availability. Generally friendly management. Generally friendly co-workers. Most kids are well-behaved and fun to talk with.

Cons

High frequency of student cancellations, resulting in pay cuts. No income security. Disorganized atmosphere - I applied to work at the center close to my house but was repeatedly scheduled at the one across town for several weeks. False advertising - was told in the interview I would get paid for last-minute cancellations, but this was not the case. Too many teachers - hard enough to get hours, let alone when kids didn't show up. Restrictive curriculum leads to a lot of repetition in lessons, which quickly becomes dull. Subject tutoring pays less than ACT prep, even though the workload is comparable.
