Pros

Some seriously talented people work there.

Cons

Hyland just let go of dozens of talented individuals in the product delivery department. But I would have given them one start even before that. Their job structure, aside from being way outside of industry standards, has changed three times in the six years I've been there, to the point where I wouldn't have known how to get a raise even if they recognized that I deserved one, which the didn't. They also underpay fairly drastically for the amount of experience and expertise a person has. The benefits are underwhelming. And the cliques can get pretty intense. Now that they don't have all their employees in their big, flashy corporate campus, it's easier to see the real company and what they represent, and who they represent (the investors). They even axed the holiday party a few years ago.

Pros

You'll work with some really amazing people. The people here, outside of management, are some of the most caring and competent people you'll meet. I've met people here that I still consider some of my best friends, and I don't foresee that changing even if our place of employment does. Due to some poorly structured and generally outdated onboarding/new hire training processes, you'll deal with a fair amount of ambiguity in what your day-to-day will look like. This is a pro if you are able to thrive in a "go figure it out" environment and can actually be rewarding if given the right opportunities.

Cons

Unfortunately, just about everything that is mentioned in other reviews is the harsh truth as to what working here is like. Early on in my tenure with Hyland it wasn't obvious to see, but once you're actually here long enough to see the politics and get a sense for how management operates, it gets seriously depressing and difficult to motivate yourself when you realize that both advancement in career and in salary are unreachable carrots that are only attainable if you join Hyland through acquisition, nepotism, or cronyism. Management track is reserved for people who are connected; which typically means people who have been here from the early days, or people who have been brought in through their friends/families connectivity. There are issues with this method already, but I don't believe this is the real problem with someone in a leadership role. The problem with leadership is how they are guided and trained by HR. There is a required training for management conducted by HR, but it doesn't encompass anything that would help a manager become a good motivator, leader, and mentor for their direct reports. Instead, Hyland conducts management training that covers how to wiggle around the inevitable salary conversations, how to find reasons as to why an employee shouldn't get a promotion (instead of providing clear direction to growth), and how to invoke fear of job security through vague communication methods.

Pros

You're all in the same ship, and this relatability lends itself to making easy friends with your peers. Perks exist that can be used. Some places have big windows to see outside. PTO is pretty good. The offices usually do not feel cramped and the location is pretty respectable. You have time to learn skills that you want to learn and hopefully apply to your job. I've personally never felt pressured to be at work longer than I need to be.

Cons

At every turn you'll be asking yourself "where did I go wrong?". Compensation, promotions, bonuses, even your placement on teams that appear out of no where and are dissolved just as quickly. You'll look around at your peers in broken states, sitting in holding patterns waiting for an ounce of recognition and respect that you know they deserve but you will come to realize is non-existent. You'll get a feeling of resent toward different people and departments that you know is misplaced because of the "us versus them" mindset that management instills into you, even within your direct team. You'll find yourself arguing with people above you for what would seem like petty reasons to anyone on the outside just to try to scrape a tiny bit of control and self-respect that the company tries to beat out of you. You'll start to question every announcement, action, and initiative you hear about to find ways it's designed to hurt you and the people around you. Even when you receive something that resembles a decent raise, you'll look at it wondering who got shafted in exchange for it. Your co-workers will pass you up without anyone telling you why, and you'll leave people that you felt were essential to your success in the dust. There is no good feeling that can come to you when you're sitting at your desk. You'll become nihlistic and paranoid at the same time because you're being strung along on something that appears to be designed to make you feel less of yourself. This is the culture that exists at Hyland Software. The fading events and parties that make the county fair look like a rager are just distractions from this reality.
