Pros

Vast, raw, untapped opportunities abound for your needs for exposure, self-satisfaction, personal validation, professional breadth and depth of expertise and experiences, and conditioning to not only boring-old direct reporting relationships, but REAL and top-quality matrix reporting relationships. You can be happy here in 3 ways: personally, professionally and organizationally, and you can do this if you approach IBM as a place where you best contribution is made by figuring out how to squeeze the most of it.

Cons

Do not come here if you think you're going to be led in to everything you need. Do not come here if you have no idea what you need. Seriously, I'm not kidding, GO TO THERAPY before or shortly after coming to IBM to understand what are your personal needs--like REALLY your personal needs: are you an introvert, an extrovert, a go-getter, a centrist, a self-deceiver, a self-validator, needy, self-aggrandizing, narcissistic, unsure of yourself, oversure of yourself, etc. etc...only come here if you know what you need. If you don't know, don't come here. Second, don't come here if you don't understand what you could possibly build on your resume in the 1st 100 days. I firmly believe that 1 year at IBM is worth 2-4 years anywhere else. If you can't put 2-3 things on your resume in 100 days or less working for IBM, then go back to therapy and see my first point. Lastly, there is no organization to be FOUND at IBM...none. It's flat, with no more than 11%-14% of its employees as people managers. IBM's organization lives IN YOUR HEAD--so get it all up in your head and figure it out. If you are the type of person who needs a very clear organization structure and you freak out without clarity, then please don't come here.

Pros

Some people that have never worked at IBM think IBM is a great company that pays well. If you have excellent people skills/emotional intelligence/ are an expert in corporate politics you might make it

Cons

A lot of cliques. Did I say a lot of cliques? Lots of freeloaders. Lots of people who have been there for decades pretending to do work. Other teams doing the same work as your team with different ways. Lots of favoritism. They layoff like their behind is on fire by the thousands and they lie all the time about their numbers. CEO lies like a professional actor. If you don’t go with the flow you are part of the reduction in force (RIF). Management doesn’t care about you. At first they pretend they like you but turn on you when you have a different opinion or idea to make things better. IBM has too many legacy systems that are outdated and too many processes that are a waste of time. IBM has lots of bullies and managers do nothing to prevent it even if reported. Lack of diversity and inclusion. Most executives and managers are white. There’s lack if respect. Don’t share anything personal. Lots of envy if you share any good news about your personal life.

Pros

It’s a job. Better than being unemployed. Sort of.

Cons

Worked in Sales for 10 years. It used to be great. Some of the best products in the market , great culture, etc. It’s now deteriorated into a toxic culture , employees are miserable , the company that once cared about its people now could not care less about them. If you are older worker you’ll be pushed out the door soon enough. But younger workers as your replacement ? They only last a couple years because it’s a terrible place to work As a Sales Rep you can be only as good as your products and they have let their products go to crap and aren’t even recognized as remote contenders in most areas because they are so outdated and bad. I had to leave because the toxic and stressful culture became too much to bear any longer. Company is lost. Pushing best people out the door while Mgt remains stale and useless .
