Striving Towards Excellence

Pros

The organization is in major transition as it's membership is shrinking and leadership is waking up to the realities of the impact. The great news is the money machine will continue to prop up the balance sheet for many years to come due to smart investments and a penchant for putting away for a rainy day. Staff is well cared for and protected from the inner workings of the internal politics so day to day life is pretty glorious. Benefits are incredible and within the last 12 months, salaries have begun to reflect market rate. There's been a lot of turnover in the last few months but that's helped open opportunities for others within the organization. The prospect is high that many retirements are on the horizon as the long tenured and long past their prime finally see the opportunity to relinquish power. This will no doubt free up resources and increase productivity. The new CEO is a breath of fresh air from the tyrant who lead the organization previously. She isn't around much but when she's in the office she takes the time to say hello and get to know staff. This goes a long way in rebuilding the culture and trust.

Cons

You can quickly earn a lot of vacation time but rarely have the opportunity to use it. Staff is "always on" and taking time away means all your work, plus more, is waited for your to return. Deadlines are assigned even when you're away so when you come back, it can take days or weeks to catch up. Supervisors often issue conditional approval for vacation---you need to be available should something come up so you're asked to keep checking your email. Not good. Some of the newest additions to the leadership team appear to have ulterior motives as they actively work against the CEO and staff to create disruption, dissent and dissatisfaction. One particular high ranking staffer has already started telling people on the outside he's the next CEO because things need to change more rapidly for the organization to stay alive and relevant. This truly is unnerving and uncomfortable to hear. More needs to be done to develop a positive culture where the employees matter. It's starting to change but it needs to become a priority. The office in Minnesota is desperately seeking relevance and often demands authority or control instead of working with others in the organization. Again, an older workforce who likely sees the writing on the wall but refuses to read what it says.
