Pros

There are some good people, there is some innovation, despite management's determination to destroy what's good about it. Used to be great.

Cons

No career advancement, no flexibility in working arrangements, no pay rises, terrible office conditions, no parking, a stuck-in-the-mud attitude to progress, and secretive management.

Thanks for taking the time to write a review although I must admit I'm surprised at some of the comments. Many individuals have flexible working arrangements with mixes of early starts or late starts or some home working so to say there is no flexibility in working arrangements is more likely to be an individual situation that may be linked to the role that you did. Additionally our office conditions are pretty good and we provide free fruit that is delivered regularly to the office as well as access to vending machines that dispense complimentary snacks and soft drinks. Yes, the car park is busy but it is not true to say there is no car parking. As you say you've been at IDBS for less than a year I'm not sure what expectations you had around pay rises and career advancement but I would hope that you had addressed any questions to your manager about these topics. Glassdoor is a great site to give people an insight into different organisations and their culture, but overly critical reviews and indeed untruthful reviews will hamper our ability to hire talent into the business. If you would like to approach me directly to discuss your review, you know how to contact me!

Pros

Working in an organisation that blends science and technology is a really interesting place to be - not just in terms of the work but also the types of people and perspectives that come together on a project. There have been a lot of changes recently in terms of helping IDBS grow up and grow into a more commercially-minded organisation – I have thought that these were changes for the better. As with any smaller organisation, the career paths are less structured, but I see this as a positive in terms of being able to get involved in other areas and projects that interest me. Particularly if you're from a science background you can work towards transitions into other areas of the business. Many people at IDBS can tell you of how they moved between departments. The work is interesting and challenging, and if you’re proactive in sharing plans for career development then this is generally supported. There's a lot of flexibility in terms of working hours, working location etc. if it's manageable for your role. The traffic on the Research Park can be frustrating if there are issues on the A3 but it’s not too often.

Cons

My perception is not that the turnover is high at IDBS – from my experience people move on as they have other opportunities elsewhere that IDBS simply can't support. To me this is both a positive and a negative. It's a smaller organisation - sometimes things can be crazy busy, other times things are more manageable - the headcount is limited and our team works around that. At the same time there's quite a lot of opportunity for autonomy and I like that too - but you might not like that if you want a more structured, defined and clear-cut role.

Poor management across the board

Pros

Small enough to get to know most people. If you are proactive there are great opportunities for learning and progressing (particularly if you are political and a good game player - you don't even have to be that good at your job).

Cons

Management is a mess. They are all too busy trying to sort themselves out that they can't see the damage it is doing to the organisation. They all have their own agendas and are not working together to make the company successful. One thing that this organisation used to have is a sense of responsibility for each other. You wouldn't to let each other down. With the behaviours of the Snr and mid- management levels that has eroded and it feels like people don't care as much.

Hi there - I'm sorry I didn't respond to your review sooner. I hope that you've seen an improvement in how the business is working together and I can honestly say that I believe a number of really positive steps were taken during 2016 which should have changed your feelings. We really want to hear feedback either direct from you or via your employee representative if that would be easier. Your opinion is important and I'd like to know if you think we're tracking in the right direction. Thanks again.
