Pros

The people are skilled at their trades and are rewarded for doing well. Employee happiness is regarded as an asset to the company, which gives the office a pleasant and productive atmosphere. The sounds floating around the office are symbiotic mixtures of high stakes decision-making, side-splitting laughter, and the orchestral melodies of Final Fantasy.

Cons

Short-term initiatives almost always trump the improvement of the overall system infrastructure, from an engineering and operational standpoint. This causes a lot of recklessly duct taping new ideas to the brand, and hacking new functionality to old code. IGN could be, and deserves to be, cleaner and classier than it currently is. This is known within the company, but progress in that direction is slow.

Pros

IGN is a big company - 300+ strong, mature and profitable - which brings lots of pros. The team has varied experience in and around the industry so there is always someone to learn from. The site is without a doubt the largest and most influential in the games business, which means you will inevitably be well-connected should you choose to be. The product and tech teams are strong and agile so you will be given the rope to explore... and potentially hang yourself. The leadership team has really changed the culture in the past few years and I find IGN to be relearning how to be nimble and innovative again after several years of post-acquisition torpor. It is refreshing.

Cons

IGN is a big company! It can be hard to make yourself known amongst senior leaders. It can also be hard to turn a big ship. Recognizing a trend and making adjustments can be cumbersome given the size of the org. IGN is owned by News Corp so if you are looking for equity and a big payday, it ain't the place. There is some in-fighting between divisions and teams, on occasion. Politics are bound to exist in an organization so large.
