Pros

The IRS will let you work independently with flexible hours and excellent retirement and leave programs including several paid holidays.

Cons

Little to no management and what management there is changes constantly. Career advancement is almost zero and the job application takes way too long.

Pros

You don't have to worry much about job security--there will always be an IRS, and, it is very unlikely that you get fired.

Cons

The amount bureaucracy is amazing. To get anything done requires so much time and so many people to approve it. And if it is computer related, it also often involves incompetent technical support people, who give wildly different answers to the same questions. The reason - see my "pro"--incompetent is not a fireable offense at the IRS.
