Pros

Interesting colleagues and good facilities. Reasonable work/life balance. Once you have a job you can usually work it as long as you want; job security is pretty good. The town of Bloomington is dynamic and a good place for a young family.

Cons

Advancement is very difficult. Positions are stratified and there's not much room for growth. The University dominates the town and community and so it tends to be arrogant in its dealings with staff; people have few alternatives if you want to remain in Bloomington. Compensation, unless you're working at the highest administrative or academic levels, does not seem to be very competitive.

Pros

Lots of flexibility in schedule and work week/day. In this position I am allowed to work abbreviated work weeks, or to alter my hours on a day to day basis to meet my personal needs. This is especially helpful if you have small children or a lot of family obligations

Cons

Pay is not very good for this level and no room to move up. I have been here for two years and there is no chance for improvement, nor am I encouraged to learn new skills. I would liken the kind of work I do a lot of the time to being a line worker at a factory. If you are just looking for job it's ok, but it doesn't make a good career.

Pros

There are many opportunities for advancement, and they assist you in furthering your education. Human Resources really wants the employees to be happy, so they offer different half-day sessions to help you with situations that arise in the work place.

Cons

A lot of the people that work in management have "education credentials" but no work experience. This can make it a difficult environment to work in when they don't know anything about computers or technology.
