Moving towards professionalism

Pros

This company is a great place to start out and get experience. Many in management positions do not have college degrees and have moved up quickly from starting positions. The company has been growing quickly by purchasing many small to medium sized businesses. The ranks are filling with competent, experienced people and the company has more professional management these days. The laboratories are getting more advanced equipment that can add to experience and resumes.

Cons

The company tends to hire people with little experience and pay low wages. There is very little specialized training offered by the company or through external training programs. The primary training method is on-the-job training. Very little employee development and no management training which is sorely needed. Highly experienced employees are not as valued and not compensated as well as in other companies.

Pros

Intertek overall is a terrific company with great people. Working out of the U.S., I don't have interaction with headquarters in the U.K. This independence (which is the norm) provides a great deal of opportunity, as does a leadership structure which is constantly evolving. This is a good company for self-starters and those who want to impact change, given the opportunities and the very fast pace.

Cons

The flipside of decentralized leadership is that communication is often a challenge, including within the U.S. and its multiple divisions, as well as between different divisions and functions. This company is probably not a good fit for those uncomfortable with ambiguity and consistently evolving structure, and is certainly not a good fit for those looking for a slow pace.
