Pros

Good people to work with that really believe in the mission.

Cons

Only people that really believe in the mission are left. Everyone else left for better pay elsewhere. Senior leadership seems checked out or uncommunicative and can't provide any clear guidance aside from, "We're still two weeks from sorting it out and we'll get back to you with an answer then". It's been two weeks for the last 8 months. Success depends on how well your manager can shield (and retain) their employees and navigate around the damage caused by leadership. Our total attrition company wide is 25% which is 'industry norm' but there are highly skilled and critical positions where people are leaving over comp with attrition over 70% in the last year and there's no ability to backfill. Increasing number of positions where there's no one even available to train a backfill because the position quit and the lead for that position quit leaving ghost systems that literally no one in the company understands.

Pros

- Work/life balance is okay if you can handle the constant fear of losing your job.

Cons

- Completely clueless middle-management, the worst I've seen. Ever since the stock price tanked and they brought in some scary C-suite sharks, the managers are running scared and trying to protect themselves to the detriment of everything else. - If you are rank-and-file, you can expect layoffs to be a constant fear in the back of your mind. If you are management, you have nothing to worry about, the entire company apparatus is set up to insulate you from accountability. - The company has no formal performance management, or even performance tracking. They randomly do leveling assessments that are retroactive and punitive. You will find out in Q3 of 2021 that your performance was "just okay" in Q1 2020. - There is no training, you are just expected to know things. - Extremely contractor-heavy development teams. The contractors are generally pretty good, but that says more about the agency that employs them than Invitae. This is a rare company where the contractors actually pity the full-time employees. - The company's outlook is abysmal. They acquired a bunch of companies during the peak of the market valuations, which every employee thought was crazy, they're barely able to keep their own product together, much less integrate other companies' products. Listen to the earnings calls! They are a total bloodbath!

Pros

- Freedom to choose the right tool for the job - Unlimited PTO - Remote friendly - Good people that are easy to work with

Cons

- The software systems are way too complex and poorly built. I attribute this to a lack of talent (the CEO said he won't pay competitive salaries) and the complex genetics space that software engineers don't really comprehend. This leads to massive tech debt. - High engineering turnover as engineers quickly get overwhelmed. Probably the highest engineering turnover I've ever seen in my career. - Engineering leadership laid off the entire production support team and expect the remaining engineers to pick up their difficult job.
