Lots of talk, no action

Pros

There are a small group of people that I couldn’t recommend more as great people and coworkers. If you’re lucky enough to work with them, you’ll have fun, learn, and accomplish things.

Cons

- Upper management has personal conflict between themselves that clouds their view of decisions that should be objective business decisions - Many people prefer to pass along work, knowing that the key to career advancement at Invoca is to talk about what you will do instead of what you actually have done or are doing - Total lack of trust between departments. For a smallish company, that prides itself on “culture” and winning awards for the best place to work (an award that definitely isn’t given because they pay for the survey the company provides) every department thinks their counterparts are lazy, incompetent, and self centered. Is everyone right? Is no one right? It doesn’t matter because you stay in your silo with your own group thinkers. - Hope you like slack huddles and zoom calls! You’ll be in 500 slack groups that you can’t mute because once a quarter you’ll receive a ping in each random group that suddenly you need to respond to ASAP. - expect every new project to be poorly defined, pushed by their manager, and then be immediately put on the back burner as soon as a new shiny project is brought up.

Pros

When you interview with Invoca, you keep hearing about how wonderful and smart the people are. When you get there, you realize how true it is. Everyone is so welcoming (which can be tricky in a remote environment) and indeed so smart and talented! One of my favorite things is how the managers really see your individual strengths and allow you to nurture them and sort of guide your own way. There’s a lot of freedom and encouragement to learn and grow, and it’s one of the most supportive places I’ve ever worked. Can’t wait to improve even more!

Cons

It’s tough being fully remote sometimes because you don’t always know who to go for across teams for questions, but that’s really just the nature of remote work and not unique to Invoca. So far I’ve always been able to find who I’m looking for :)

Great People, Amazing Customers and Challenging Work

Pros

Invoca gives opportunities to those who seek them. If you want to grow technically, there are customers and projects for you to work on. If you want to grow professionally, there are development courses and strategic objectives (V2MOM methodology) for you to tap into. The more you know where you want to focus, the more Invoca will get you there. The people who make up Invoca, including employees and customers, are impressive. Our customers are visionary heads of marketing, organized account managers and highly intelligent marketing analysts, and it's fun to see them growing their business by using Invoca. Customers are doing big things to tie their digital marketing efforts to the revenue/sales taking place on the phone, and the stories of how they're doing it seem endless. From the diverse people to the dynamic work they're doing, the employees make Invoca a great place to work. I spend the majority of my time with Invocans even outside of work, and have never before had a job where I liked my co-workers this much. If you like creative thinking and problem solving, you'd love the work we do.

Cons

The product is fairly customized for each user and customer so each installation requires proper care and feeding. Call centers, phone calls and digital marketing don't always see eye-to-eye so it takes customers a while to figure out their business goals around buying the software. It's a difficult product to learn and requires constant training and education. Working here is not for the light hearted. If you need to know exactly what your job is, there's probably a better fit out there. If you need a job you finish between the hours of 8-5, this isn't the right gig. If you need structure and management layers to understand where you fit in to the organization, you won't like Invoca.

Not for semi-smart people

Pros

New CEO is fearless and smart, joined six months ago and made all of the overdue hard decisions to set the company on an accelerated path. He had to send off some of the early-stage people who are great for the first chapter, but who choke on scale and planning. This will be his third IPO, and he has a calm, cool demeanor with an intense smarts, easy laugh, "carpe diem" tattoo, and drive to win. The company is packed with much-higher-than-average IQs who wear flip flops and fill coffee cups with beer from the in-house pub at the end of the day. If you're not smart, you won't make it. The culture can be shrewd and rejects those with underdeveloped intellect. And, if you're not at least a little bit interesting, you probably won't make friends. One guy can lick his elbow, lots of musicians, Olympic calibre athletes, and an endless variety of team sports. Volleyball, soccer, basketball, kickball, softball, frisbee, surfing, triathlons, and of course ping pong. Very competitive. Very "team." Lots of career opportunities and internal promotions.

Cons

The culture really does reject average intelligence and boring people. You're expected to solve a lot of problems independently and to teach and learn from those around you, quickly. If you can't hold a complex conversation without preparation, this probably won't work. And, if you get bummed out when an incompetent person is terminated, then you're going to be miserable. It's not the managers who do the firing so much, it's the culture that is inclusive of only high performers and drivers. Invoca's product is complex and I think that's why you have to be smart and self-driven to make the cut.

Slow, slow growth

Pros

Great work life balance Very solid benefits, health insurance, etc. The CEO is a great man. Very interpersonal, no bs. Very customer centric as well, much of his time is spent meeting with customers. His head’s not in outer space, he’s a very much dialed-in CEO.

Cons

Culture: People on glassdoor say that Invoca has great culture but I argue that there almost is no culture. 95% of communication with your coworkers will be over slack. The rest over zoom. The chances of meeting any of your colleagues in person is slim to none. There is a famous quote "Culture eats strategy for breakfast" which Invoca could learn from. The company is a bunch of siloed departments that hate interacting with each other. In my opinion, the elimination of offices as a cost saving measure will only negatively impact the success of the company. Culture is a subjective topic, but to me it’s more than zoom meetings and ERG's. Slow growth: Invoca had made the recent milestone of attaining 100 million in annual recurring revenue. Something very impressive for a growing SAAS company. Unfortunately since the point though, it seems the growth has stagnated. Costs had to be cut in 2023 and some layoffs occurred as the company acknowledged their biggest expense is payroll. Customer churn is high which means that new bookings are an essential to keep revenue afloat. I believe their biggest hinder to growth is excessive hiring and an over-hierarchical org. A person gets manager thrown in their title, a junior person is hired. Teams are grown and grown with overlapping roles and skills I don’t understand why half of them were hired. You have to ping multiple people to get something done when realistically one person can just take on that amount of responsibility. I mentioned work life balance is great here and that’s because they’ve hired too many people. Everyone on a team covers something very specific and it ultimately makes initiatives longer to complete, not the opposite. This is a great place to work and become complacent. When I joined, I was impressed by all the long tenure employees who’ve worked here for over 10 years. Now I more so believe they’re just comfortable. If you live in a LCOL area, you’ll have it made here. Everyone's a winner and no one gets laid off (except for sales people). Everyone just loves to pat each other on the back after they did the smallest effort of work ever. Make sure you log that positive feedback in lattice, how else will it get noticed? I truly wish this company the best. I hope you break even by the end of the year. I have no hard feelings, this is all just mere feedback.

A True Gem

Pros

I've worked at a variety of tech companies and agencies and I have to say that Invoca is a special place. We do our best work, trust each other, and everyone understands and is working collectively toward the company goals. But above all, employees feel supported by their peers, managers, and the leadership team. This means we can push ourselves without being fearful, speak up or stay quiet without being judged, and celebrate our successes with pure joy and appreciation for each other. It's unique for a high performing software company to have this kind of culture and while it has always been part of Invoca's DNA in some way, it has definitely flourished under the leadership of our CEO, Gregg Johnson.

Cons

We are growing and expanding in Denver and SF, so there's still work to do to ensure these other offices are on the same "level" as HQ in Santa Barbara.

Invoca is a special place! We're working hard to make sure we continue that as we grow. We're also working to make sure that we have this same environment in our other offices. It's definitely a big focus of our discussions on growth in other areas. Thank you!

Pros

Learning stipend, great pay, team was knowledgeable and fun.

Cons

Bad micromanager. Ever since the manager was replaced, team morale plummeted and ever since, everyone on the team was more hesitant on speaking out especially with layoffs that affected two of team members. Good luck moving up too because positions on other team aren't really available. Also, they moved some people up to tier 2 without really considering more technical members.
