Pros

Working with students can be very fulfilling

Cons

Statewide leadership constantly bounces from one gimmick to another trying to solve financial problems, and fails every time. But, the people who suffer for that are not the failing leaders, but the rank-and-file. Lafayette campus laid off several long-time faculty in 2020 and 2021. No job security for anyone who isn't a Systems Office vice-president, no accountability for anyone who is. Financial state of college will continue to be bad, layoffs will continue. Employee salaries are awful, but president either cannot or will not do anything about it. President seems set on turning Ivy Tech back into a vocational-technical college, consigning all other stuff to a centrally-managed online unit.

Pros

Strong benefit program (watch out for delayed retirement plan access). They are really good at spending money on new buildings and remodeling (why did they need Italian marble for the entry way of the NMC building?)

Cons

Low pay, living in Indianapolis, incompetence and nepotism are the rule for department chairs and up. Management has lost sight of education, they are focused on administration and justifying more positions and pay for useless administrators. The faculty full-time to adjunct ratio is 30-70 and among the lowest in the country. Management bloviates about student completion ratios but seem to be clueless about the importance of faculty vs. administration. Promotions seem to be dictated by who is playing golf with Tom, or what family you were born into.

Pros

You make a valuable contribution to the community. Students are genuinely appreciative of teachers' efforts and are interested in learning. Excellent benefit package.

Cons

Isolation from other faculty; very low pay scale so you have to work other jobs to make ends meet. Lack of technology in classrooms.
