Dysfunctional Government

Pros

Impacting the end result(s) for tax payers. Making a difference for the constituents. Helping the Public and taxpayers.

Cons

Manipulative culture, focusing on what's in it for them as opposed to how to be better at government. Many people across various lines of business in King County do not collaborate together; instead they oppose each other and thwart each other's progress.

It's a Job

Pros

Good pay and benefits. Some departments have great programs and assignments...some even have great commraderie among employees! The current elected Executive is more management oriented than the last.

Cons

Top down management, hiring based on who likes you, reinvent the wheel mentality, senior-level management positions are political appointments and may not be 'best-in-class'. Some unions rule the roost...the needs to be more partnerships and what is good for the citizens, not just employees. Management/Services are not based 'best practices' or 'systems thinking' models.

Pros

Great benefits and compensation, wide variety of work available, dedicated colleagues (for the most part).

Cons

Managers hoard information, often resulting in extensive re-work, and folks who come with fresh ideas are often shunned. New managers are not provided adequate training on how to lead people, and change overall does not come easy. The county also does not follow its own sexual harassment investigation policy, even if you bring it up with the head of the HR delivery division. I reported harassment and was eventually pushed out because of it.
