Pros

Nice coworkers. 9/80 work schedule

Cons

Very poor management. Favoritism. unequal pay per position. People have to do others work because others get away without doing their job.

Not what they tell you

Pros

Pay is okay. The people are all pretty nice. Sort of unlimited vacation.

Cons

First of all, in the Space Antenna business area, you will never be able to design anything. You will always be just a drafter, no matter how high your level. You can be a level 5 with 30 years with the company and still only be doing redlines. That is if you can get the work. Most programs only want to use the people they have worked with before, so if you are new, expect to not have any work for months on end. They don't want you to charge to training so you will end up on overhead projects that just kill time. On a higher level, there is a power struggle between the design teams in Florida and Rochester. Both have their own way of doing things and both think their way is the best. They are trying to come up with one standard way of doing things and it is going to be a fight until the end. Meanwhile, those of us doing the grunt work have to try to figure out how to do our jobs when everyone wants something completely different. They will tell you that they are all for remote or hybrid work, but the old timers will make you feel like you can't succeed working from home. That the people doing it are just charging 40 hrs but only putting in 2. They make you feel like you have to come in only to be 1 of 20 people on a floor that has hundreds of cubes.

Good and bad

Pros

Flexible hours Good people Fairly interesting projects As much work as you want Lots of stability over time

Cons

Management is disconnected from the actual programs. Management doesn't understand the technologies. A constant stream of useless emails from corporate about political things that don't relate to most people's jobs. Corporate is very disconnected partially because the company is so large. Management doesn't take ownership of the direction of the company or technology. This is partially because most of the work is government contracts. Benefits are decreasing: pension, cost of health care, dental, vacation has gone to "unlimited", and many other negatives. The merger with Harris was an overall negative on almost every aspect of the employee's experience. Out-performers are not rewarded appropriately. It is best to be average.
