Pros

- Big projects and access to lots of field experience - Free lunch on Wednesdays (often sub-par)

Cons

Where do I start (speaking on behalf of the NYC office only): - No work life balance, staff ENCOURAGED to work 60+ hour work weeks and then asked to work a Saturday shift on Friday at 3PM. Company only values (and promotes) the employees who devote their lives to Langan and work nonstop. - No raise for professional licensure (even though company bills clients at a higher rate once you receive your license). Where is the extra money going? - Project managers have no time to teach staff because they are overworked and can barely handle the day-to-day workload/meetings/clients. - Very toxic culture in the NYC office. My PM was VERY passive and a downright jerk. No appreciation ever. Upper management does nothing about bully PMs so it's toxic from top to bottom and largely the executives should be at fault for this trend. They should observe the personalities of the PMs, NOT just who brings in the most money. Company executives turn a blind eye to PMs who bully/verbally abuse people as long as they bring in lots of money. - Doesn't respect employee PTO. Requested time off well in advance (3+ weeks). Most times request is ignored or forgotten. Every time on PTO, company called or texted me. No respect for employees PTO to relax and try to disconnect from work. - TIGHT margins. PMs complain that a report is taking a new staff engineer way too long but they give no help to the staff engineer. Also they low-balled the proposal just to get the project so scraping by just to break even. - LANGAN takes EVERY project they can get. BIGGGG mistake. Not enough manpower, and employees are barely getting by because too many new (and small) projects are filling up the pipeline. LANGAN needs to learn not to take a small 5k project because it's more work (and more money) than it's worth. - Attempts to have culture activities/outings/social events, but most employees cannot attend because overworked or too exhausted from work. - LONNNNNNG work hours. Don't sign up for this job unless you like working 7AM to 6PM standing in freezing rain on a LOUD construction site with no trailer to seek shelter in (and 6 days a week at that). - Raises are barely anything to rave about. Just enough to be able to maintain that they DID give a raise. - MULTIPLE on-going lawsuits. PMs and Executives are looking to crucify staff once lawsuits start but keep you out of the loop on all the details. They want just enough info from you to report back to client and throw you in the fire. - Attempted to do a company wide survey (by 3rd party to keep it unbiased HA!). Survey results were massaged/manipulated by internal higher up executives (over 9+ months I also note) to give the results they wanted. Minimal changes enacted after company survey. Majority of the changes were not followed though (example: no fly zone email policy - lasted ONE day) - Company wants you to work 9-10 hour days in the field. IF there is the rare occasion you finish early in the field (only 7 hours), PM wants you to come home and finish office work. NO THANKS! - PMs not once came by site and offered to bring water or supplies as a helping hand. The only thing the PM did was stop by site and complain that we were sitting down (the one 5 minute break we got after a week of nonstop work). - Horrible retention. Most engineers leave after max 4 years. No changes are made. Group doesn't acknowledge when an employee leaves (HOW TOXIC). They pretend it doesn't exist and ignore the fact. No celebration or even a simple email to acknowledge their efforts over the years. - No QA/QC. Drawings are drafted by staff engineers with MINIMAL oversight and review by executives. No time is given for discussion of drawings/engineering calculations. Staff is simply told what to put on drawings. No collaboration efforts. - Endless hours of CAD. - Competitive workplace. Employees don't compliment each other. Everyone is just trying to "one-up" their co-employee. - PMs need serious management training. To them, the staff/senior staff are not equals but servants. No respect for one another. Multiple staff/senior staff complain of EXTENSIVE verbal abuse by the PMs.

Pros

High profile projects, junior staff are great to work with (before they leave for another employer).

Cons

Prepare to be thrown into the fire. The performative nature of “work-life balance” and “diversity” initiatives are especially frustrating. After-work correspondence and weekend work is discouraged (via the occasional mass email by HR), yet essentially no one adheres to the suggestion, and there is an expectation from local management to sacrifice all waking hours and to make your social life and work life one in the same. Diversity initiatives are marketed externally but are not actually reflected in management demographics. High turnover is a product of the tough work environment. Asking for help or needing a break is generally ignored by supervisors and shareholders.

Terrible Communication

Pros

Engineers, from what I can see, have it better then the IT department. Managers are very friendly and approachable in the various Engineering departments and UNFORTUNATELY for IT professionals this is untrue in the IT department.

Cons

Biggest issue negatively affecting this department as a whole =1. Management. Focused purely on "sweatshop" workers then hiring employees and management who know what they are doing and are EDUCATED. Too much time spent on trying to learn/teach new technology. Taking on new technology they can't handle. The Managers attitude and Her overlooking education. 2. Communication. 2nd manager doesn't speak english.
