Admin Holds All The Power

Pros

Great pay. Great benefits. Coworkers and students are wonderful.

Cons

Teachers are at the mercy of administrators. There is no real HR support for employees in the event of conflict with administrators. As there is no unbiased 3rd party arbitration process, administrators hold unlimited power over teachers. I wrote an email to administrative leadership advocating for higher pay for our support staff. I was shocked when I found out that school support staff only make minimum wage at Learn4Life. Their equals in local school districts - with union support - make closer to 25 dollars an hour and up. In my email, I explained that our support staff were having a difficult time keeping their cars filled with gas - which explained the very high turnover rate. From that point on, I was under a microscope. I started to get written up for ridiculous things and was eventually fired. My students and coworkers were heartbroken - I was heartbroken.

Pros

Great health benefits 30 hour teaching week No take home grading

Cons

Pre-done curriculum does not allow for much authentic teaching. Huge focus on data and paperwork that has very little correlation. Many employees are a clique and if you are not in that gossip clique then you will not only be ostracized but be a continual target for anything and everything. Will be reminded that you are an at will employee and can be fired at any time with or without reason. Curriculum and classification of curriculum from core to elective will change overnight and then students will not be enrolled in the correct courses. Working with the at risk demographic is rewarding but that reward will not last once you are continually emailed and spoken to about students who do not attend school and you do not have any functional methods of contact. Admin expects you to be a miracle worker but they will not lift a finger to help you. The moment you cross one in a leadership role your life will be a living hell. Many staff members are either related to one another or are the poster child for mediocrity. You will be told that mediocrity is not accepted but the moment you speak up about others not doing their job, taking extremely long breaks or being late to work consistently (where students are continually waiting) you will be on the chopping block. If you are a high performer you will be taken advantage of and asked to help clean up the mess of others instead of admin working with those who are not performing up to par! If you are asked to help, get it in writing because the moment you take the initiative and help (without being told) you will be told you are overstepping your bounds and that you should not do that and you can be terminated. If you are not in the selected group you will never promote. No pay scale - a 15 year veteran teacher with an extended education will make the same base salary as a teacher who just cleared their credential with no additional education.

Pros

Nice place to work. Minimal direct instruction and grading. You see students one-on-one once a week (if the kid bothers to show up) to turn in HW and assign new HW. Nice friendly staff, all teachers are in one giant room which is kinda fun compared to traditional school. (if you are at a big site, some of their sites are no bigger than a single room with limited amenities) . No bells. Nice pay and bennies for the work load. leave at the end of the day and leave the worries of the day behind.

Cons

This company is allowing a complete take over by Options for Youth. (They view them as their main competition) This is very annoying because new principals and management are from OFY and they favor their own. That is why I left. Also, this company claims 100% ADA (how schools make money) for so much as a scrap of work from a student. Yes, one lousy, poorly completed assignment and the company will claim every hour of every day for the entire month!! This is what teachers at traditional schools babysit full classes all day for! As a result they have very deep pockets...So, I felt very dishonest working here. (but those feelings fade over time, ha!) I just don't know how it is legal... But trust me, if the school were to ever get audited, they would blame you and you would loose your credential. (another reason I left) lots of other issues with controlling admin that just sit around and drink Starbucks. Really, they do almost nothing and make heaps of cash, it's crazy. No summers off sucks too. Actually, you will work twice as hard during the summer!
