Pros

Nothing comes to mind at the moment.

Cons

I’m sharing this perspective after being gone from LC for a couple of years. In my opinion, working at LC is like being in high school with everything being a popularity contest and an opportunity to confirm more. I found that everyone dresses the same, acts the same, and looks the same. I enjoyed my time there at first, until I got on the wrong side of the wrong person. Boundaries were crossed regularly, i went to my mentor at one point with a work question and he felt the need to use analogy about s** to make a point. I received regular feedback from my leader that was extremely personal and had no impact on my work. Working at LC was personally traumatic to me and has made me question so many things. I have no desire to ever step foot in a church again. Working at LC - I thought I was going to be surrounded by godly people when in reality I just found myself surrounded by people determined to be a copy of the Groeschels. I want nothing to do with LC or anyone affiliated with it but I share this as a word of caution for new staff members. Be cautious, ask questions, and when something makes you uncomfortable speak up for yourself.

Not The Same Church I Got Hired At

Pros

Mission is great. Lots of great leaders and people. Focused. Know who they are as a church.

Cons

Gone away following their own processes. HR is toothless, does not advocate for their employees, and does not bring checks to upper leadership. For me specifically, after 9 years of employment the process that has always been the same was not only not followed but directly disregarded the process and said so to my face. After receiving a yearly review of just shy of an exceeds expectations for my role, 3 weeks later I was made aware that my leaders had been in discussion for “months” to remove me from my role and demote me to something else with no prior conversations. Words in the meeting like, “this is going to be surprising” and “I know I just dropped a bomb in your families lap” would have never been allowed when we first were hired. Sadly it appears to be more common place at Life.Church as I have talked with current and former employees that have experienced the same thing. I believe leadership is getting tired of dealing with the problems of ministry at the scale that Life.Church is now at. Couple this with many tenured people leaving or being let go, the internal culture of consistency is beginning to break away and heavy handed leadership of “my way or the highway” has begun to take hold. I wish nothing but good things for LC, but I am afraid that if some internal structural change doesn’t occur then in the not too distance future, we will be listening to the podcast, “The Rise and Fall of Life.Church: how the largest church crumbled from the inside.”

Burnout culture

Recommend

Business Outlook

Pros

Great benefits, lots of development opportunities, room for advancement, amazing coworkers and volunteers

Cons

Pace is incredibly fast and can make you burnout very quickly. Definitely an achievement culture, the harder you work, the more opportunities you’ll get. If you slow down because you’re struggling, you get sidelined or left behind. Work/life balance is non-existent at times. It’s a struggle to get leadership to understand that going fast isn’t always the best option when it’s hurting the people doing the work. On the YouVersion team specifically, you must compete for resources and beg for headcount/new hires. Tools that are required to do your role effectively are not provided, or you have to build them yourselves. You are held accountable for issues that happen because your team doesn’t have the capacity/bandwidth to take on more. Some teams are over resourced, while others are barely able to keep their heads above water. I have seen many of my friends crying and overwhelmed because they feel they can’t keep up, or just aren’t doing enough.

Thank you for sharing your feedback! We agree with you: Life.Church is a fast-paced environment and the work we are called to do is demanding! To do that work, it’s crucial to steward our time, energy, and resources well, and we encourage our staff members to do that in a variety of ways to avoid burnout. We are always trying to get better at making sure that the time you spend outside of the office is as fruitful and fulfilling as the time you invest at work. If you have more specific ways we could get better at promoting a better work-life balance, we’d love to hear from you! You can send us an email at hr@life.church, and someone from our team will be in touch with you soon.
