Pros

My manager gives me a lot of autonomy to do my work. The pay and benefits are not bad, but are not anything to brag about either. Job security may be better at this company than others -- I'm not sure nor am I convinced (we've been having lay-offs, and there's rumor of more lay-offs coming).

Cons

Financially oriented instead of engineering oriented -- always feel like budget and schedule take precedence over good engineering practice. Work-life balance is non-existant; in my department, they expect employees to work a lot of hours. The five-hour gate is terrible -- every month, the management in my department expect people to work 20 hours and not get paid for that work, but they still bill the customer!

Too large a company

Pros

The work was reliable, even during the economic downturn. Lockheed employees get some excellent employee discounts from companies. They paid for security clearance for me, which is often difficult to get an employer to spring for.

Cons

The group I was with had no connections to the rest of the company, and appeared to have been forgotten. The portions of the company responsible for making promises to the government didn't seem to have any communication with the portions responsible for fulfilling those promises. The company provides every kind of service and product to the government, so they don't specialize or excel in anything.

Pros

Extremely interesting projects and programs; great to serve the American people through technological projects.

Cons

Compensation is not that great; as a contractor you often will be between a salaried and a rate employee with the worst of both worlds, poor benefits for the high class of work performed. you need to love the work and like the folks you work with, then it is great.
