Pros

9/80 - Every other Friday is an off day Great people to work around Take care of their employees as best they can within a large company Informative management (upper/executive) This company is a great company with a nice benefits package - 3 weeks vacation from the first year, 1 week plant shutdown over Christmas/New Year and every other Friday off, nice 401K match, healthplan, tuition reimbursement, and upward mobility for those motivated and driven to seek it.

Cons

I would be hard pressed to come up with a legitimate con. Yes, Lockheed and most other companies have their share of challenges, but most are minor in nature. You will likely hear about, as a defense contractor, it is viewed as a volatile employment option, but I believe if you work hard and you happen to be in some department that is being eliminated/reduced b/c of contractual issues, you will likely find an open position somewhere else in the company.

Steady, albeit slow growth opportunities

Pros

Steady flow of contracts allows for participation across a wide range of customers and stages of a contract (bid, system design, development, integration and test). High integrity of management Work ethic among engineering staff

Cons

In some pockets of LM, engineering is a dying art. While some areas continue to nurture engineering skill transfer and learning curve, other areas are allowing those skills to atrophy, which will eventually cause the company issues. The work ethic among engineering is not always matched by other areas of the company (support staff, ILS, bizops)

Pros

Relaxed work environment, no suits and people are nice and interested in there work true 40 hour work week, no insane over time 9/80 work schedule gives you a three day weekend every other weekend very flexible with working hours and vacation, "flex time" allows you to build up additional time off Good salary, not the best for the Bay Area but considering the relaxed work environment they offer good compensation. Internal transfers offer access to a wide variety of industries and skill building opportunities.

Cons

While the LM name recognition can help when looking for work this is not a great place for young people to start a career. The company is over managed and seems more interested in chasing the latest ISO / Jack Welch certification than looking at its own history or asking its own employees about what works. There is too much hierarchy and over specialization, that said it's a big company and you can transfer internally to gain a variety of experience. Heading up the management ladder internally though probably won't work, one of my best qualified friend who worked there at the same time as mean and was doing his best was basically told to stop working so hard b/c he was making people look bad.
