Beware of Health Insurance

Pros

Diversity of projects, opportunities to move around

Cons

Every since the company self-insured they have become micro managers of your health care. They have become the deciders that appear to be more interested in deny, delay, avoid providing anything more than annual checkups. Aetna is just a front company for the corporation and adds no value but does create a lot of obstacles. One no longer knows what will be paid and what will not. Recently, months were spent trying to get a basic service that cost less than $300.

Pros

Our site was fortunate in having a lot of interesting and challenging projects to work on. The engineers I worked with in my group were bright, motivated, and really challenged one another to improve. Good benefits and pay although health care was getting slashed every year.

Cons

Senior management seems far more interested in managing the stock price than they do in the long term outlook for the company. Corporate politics and business units weigh in heavily on what funds you receive for pursuing new business and doing research and dev. Our expertise was sometimes used on proposals but the work went elsewhere. Company seems disinterested in supporting CA, moving work to lower cost centers abroad. Race to the bottom is on in moving to a services company with low labor rates. Limited ability to move up or break through the glass ceiling. Many different cultures exist at different sites, and business units tend to compete with one another rather than collaborate. Numerous ethical complaints at our site were never resolved.
