Easy and boring

Pros

Work was doable without serious issues. Never had to work overtime or felt pressure to do so. Management was accommodating about shifting work hours around slightly when deadlines allowed for it. People were cooperative instead of competitive. Company seemed stable. Development practices seemed to be steadily improving. A few nice policies, like subscriptions to PluralSight so that we could upskill on the job between regular work. Hybrid work schedule.

Cons

Poor project planning and tight deadlines. Opaque leadership (information withholding, dropping hotfix dates with very little heads up). Devs were generally brought into the loop way too late. Due to all this (among other things), projects wouldn't come out ideal at times, and collective stress levels could spike. Legacy codebase and tech stack, boring domain, boilerplate heavy codebase, highly questionable architecture, time-consuming test procedures, slow build times, lots of major inconveniences, all of which made it hard to stay engaged some days. Moderate amounts of bureaucracy made getting certain tasks done difficult, especially for projects. "Ask for permission" culture, instead of "ask for forgiveness" culture. Outdated style of measuring performance (Jira ticket quotas, defect count) which could be gamed. No reward for doing thorough code reviews or peer dev testing. Low culture of engineering excellence overall, Hard to find meaningful mentorship. Company was at an awkward size, making career growth opportunities very limited. Pay and benefits package was mediocre at best.

limited my ability to grow

Pros

I met some amazing co-workers that made my days brighter and lighter.

Cons

Working at this company was a rollercoaster ride. At first I was excited to be apart of the team and work in a field that I enjoy. I saw the Olympic Games they do on social media and thought wow they must care for their people there. I soon discovered things were not what they seemed. I experienced a work culture that silenced ideas from certain types of people while accepting ideas from others. I experienced leaders who would be dishonest about work that I had done and say things to me that were less than professional. When I resigned from the company and provided notice, I was asked to leave right away. My coworker was correct, they perform at a low level in the department we were in. Processes were slow and disorganized to get projects completed. They were not willing to follow best practices for my field which inhibited my ability to truly grow and advance in my career and gain meaningful experience.
