Pros

Most all the employees want to become the "#1 petrochemical company". Employees support each other and attempt to move priority items to completion. Most managers are working hard to retain and promote their employees.

Cons

We are currently in a situation of losing mechanical engineering talent in the Houston area. This is creating a difficult statement in "goal zero". Compensation is not retaining or recruiting new talent. This has multiple effects with the management resources required to backfill positions and the distraction of engineers.

Pros

You have a job Some people still care, although less and less Central location, with public transportation You still have benefits Most people are remembering what "was" and not what "is". They remain from loyalty, or because they think it can't get any worse.

Cons

E-Slotting (the new grading system) Middle managers are worn out Employees are worn out No appreciation from Sr Management on what the people in the trenches do day-to-day No Trust from Sr Management, they are all cronies from a previous life

Pros

Very competitive compensation in relation to the rest of the chemical industry and local Houston area. Benefits are on par with other companies. Also, compared to prior companies, I have not had to work as much overtime. I think most people in the company genuinely strive to maintain a "normal" work week and work / life balance.

Cons

Management changes to the structure, benefits and performance review systems after the merger of Lyondell and Basell make it like every other chemical and oil and gas company in the area, which is unfortunate because it is becoming "ordinary". Lyondell was previously known for recruiting the best; however, once you are hired, you are given mediocre tasks, not empowered and ideas for improvement are shot down (at least in some areas of the company).
