Pros

MIT provides good financial support for its Master's and PhD students through Research Assistant-ships. This allows students to allocate more time to their thesis work. Few universities in the US offer this support for Master's students.

Cons

Nothing specific to being a Research Assistant (RA). There are many cons to doing a PhD in general. PhD students/research assistants are paid far less than regular employers. Funding constraints dictated by the sponsor paying for the RAship can limit focus areas for the PhD.

Great place to learn

Pros

You will learn a lot. It's fun. Around half the students are great.

Cons

There's a culture of not admitting you're struggling and denying interests outside of academics/work.
