Pros

Being a graduate student at MIT opens a lot of doors. Some professors are loaded with research funds, so it's a great environment for intellectual discovery. Also, if you want to make a startup, MIT is the place to be.

Cons

Very isolating experience, research is often frustrating and fruitless. You basically live for the small moments of success. Also inconsistent access to some opportunities between different labs, particularly in regards to internships. Internships are really helpful for post-graduation employment, but some (most?) professors really hate them.

Worst Place Ever to Work

Pros

Compensation and benefits are decent. But NOT worth it.

Cons

Politics, politics POLITICS. You basically have to be married with kids or male to get any advancement. Very toxic work environment. Depends largely on the department, but I was working in a soul-crushing environment. It didn't matter how well you did your job, but if you make one mistake, hell hath no fury. No real training to speak of. We were expected to know the job on day 1. Management was not receptive to questions. Questions were met by answers of "I'm not going to tell you how to do your job" and "As the (insert job title here), you should know what to do." I wasted 6 years of my life here, and pretty much destroyed all my personal relationships in the process due to emotional/psychological breakdowns.

Pros

Working with some of the most talented scientists in the world. Lots of independence. The MIT brand is an important door opener all over the world. The environment is very open and inclusive, good ideas and creativity are prized.

Cons

You need to be very self motivated.
