Pros

There is a lot of freedom in my specific lab, to pursue many ideas. The resources are exceptional--money is rarely a problem. We learn very valuable skills in leadership, project development, instrumentation, among many other crucial concepts.

Cons

The hours are high and the pay is exceptionally low. The departmental culture has a negative effect on many of the people in it.

Pros

Great benefits, job security, connect with brilliant people, fantastic time off/sick policies.

Cons

Working with outdated technology due to limited vision of IT leadership. Pay scale generally 20% lower than what you would get in the non-education sectors. Limited to no advancement in most areas. Salary increases tied to a set percentage across the board not based on performance. You can literally being doing the job of three people and get paid the same as you'd get to do one of them with another Institution in the area.

Pros

Egalitarian, mission driven, exciting, influential, impactful, human work environment. Very entrepreneurial "just do it" (build it / make it culture.) Lots of autonomy,

Cons

Surprisingly low tech in many systems and processes - quite bureaucratic procedures. Salaries can be quite stagnant. Not really growing so new opportunities may depend on waiting for people to leave or retire.
