Inspiring Place to Work

Pros

MIT is a wonderful place to work. If you are in admin staff you can count on solid opportunities for career development, generous vacation benefits, and great people around every corner. I have taken advantage of the TAP program (Tuition Reimbursement) and the pension and for many years used MIT Medical which has a small-town, caring, competent staff.

Cons

Performance reviews can be something you need to ask for. Dealing with some of the Ivory Tower perspectives can be maddening.

Pros

Can get involved in fantastic research opportunities. Very flexible (at least for me) vacation/ holiday/ work scheduling. Very nice benefits.

Cons

Can get stuck doing something awful - each fiefdom is drastically different in personality (mostly based on whomever is running said lab/department/etc). The fact that so much paperwork has to be dealt with in *paper* in this day and age is a bit ridiculous. Salary was a joke.

Pros

Depending on your position, the pay is great. There are so many opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration and the work is very fulfilling and rewarding in many ways.

Cons

Your career is what you make it. If you don't seek advancement or growth, your career will probably remain stagnant. But be the first to do something new and innovative and you will see your future is what you make it!
