it is a highly competitive environment

It has little structure and is a reactive organization. Faculty are masters of their domains far more than at peer institutions and senior administration is reluctant to any standards (restricting their freedom to exploit) and is reactive to solving problems, not proactive about avoiding them in the first place. It's a hard place to work, driven by privilege not merit or commonly shared values.
