Pros

MIT's institution-wide policies are very employee friendly, with good benefits, vacation, flexibility, carefulness with Covid, perks like free food and events, etc. And MIT is very good about hiring internal candidates, so admin and educational staff have job change opportunities. Also there is a real commitment to diverse hiring.

Cons

MIT has very little oversight/control over how individual departments are run, so the experience depends totally on who you work for- and faculty are, generally, not awesome managers. So while MIT may be good about work-life balance and treating employees with courtesy and respect, you might end up in a dept with a boss who expects insane work hours, has inconsistent expectations, or plays major favorites, and MIT can't/doesn't do much about it.

Pros

Flexibility, positive mission, decent people

Cons

Advancement can be difficult. They worry so much about equality that it's hard to reward a person who has worked hard with a promotion. People like it there so they often don't move on and make room for others to advance.
