Pros

The FFRDC model (but being eroded by “growth” imperative). There was a time I recommended the company.

Cons

Since the CEO has come to power, it’s been a circus. The reorganization YEARS LATER confuses customers, staff, and Division Managers. That one is playing out now as two different managers attempting to make conflicting decisions on a single large customer. Only the mid level project leaders are connected to the customers. Hardly a senior manager can really claim that they know their corresponding customer SES and their challenges. It’s been years since I’ve seen a Division Manager or above had any positive effect on a project. DEI concerns over having decent financial systems causing the company to suddenly have a severe cash flow problem and benefit cuts. Financial data is always lagging and angering customers. Not knowing that Labor Day could not be a floater holiday (in MA law) and retracting an announcement. RIF announced in an app. It’s one mistake after another. From CEO, to CFO, to HR, to Legal….one mistake after another.

Pros

I've been part-time for a long time and they've treated me with respect and I've had interesting work for most of that time.

Cons

Very recent cuts to benefits of long-term employees have morale at about the lowest I've seen it in over 20 years. Recent RIF in one of the FFRDCs was carried out in a most unprofessional manner.

Pros

My technical colleagues are amazing - smart, collaborative people. My work is very interesting and I feel like it has worthwhile impact. The switch to teleworking (or whatever they're calling it) has improved my work-life balance.

Cons

The reorg and accompanying layoffs were ill-timed and ill-considered. Which pretty much sums up management's approach - they don't think 2 steps ahead or the disconnect between what they're saying and what their actions imply. They're focusing on hiring "world class experts" more than giving the existing workforce opportunities to grow. Job reqs are often open externally and not internally. They have dreams beyond their reach given the salaries they can afford to pay. People in many parts of the company are pretty demoralized. They pay lip service to diversity and seem to only take action when phrases like "hostile work environment" are used. They come out with new policies or procedures with no real justification or transparency. The benefits are "industry average" and the pay is below that for some disciplines. It's like they forget that they have smart people working for them.
