Pros

Diverse set of projects and staff. Work life balance. Good coworkers. Nice facilities. Convenient access to the McLean metro.

Cons

MITRE was previously a company where you could spread your wings and were rewarded for taking risks, learning new skills, and developing long-term sponsor relationships. However, the shrinking volume of impactful projects means that staff are encouraged to accept projects just for coverage, and then criticized during the review period for not making enough of an impact! End-of-year review process is a farce and PL inputs and the results of "CLEAR" conversations are not considered during laddering—it’s all about who you know. So, don't work here unless you are okay with pay below the industry average, and a glacial promotion track (unless, of course, you are a favorite). Lack of really good senior (top down) technical oversight and support within the centers, combined with non-technical middle management (especially portfolio managers), is a recipe for disaster. Plus, strange split of the work program and portfolios, means it is difficult to know who is charge or to assign accountability.

Pros

Real need in niche FFRDC space from sponsor for skiils. Great projects to get on if you seek them out on your own and kiss right rings to get on. Unless funding gets cut and Level 6 or 7 staff kicks everyone off, but makes sure they protected themselves with sufficent remaning STE budget to cling to another 10 different projects they will nickel and dime.

Cons

No technical innovation or engineering leadership comming out of Level 6 & 7 senior managers. Not all, but most hide behind PM duties by making it sound overly complicated; come on guys - its a STE cost only budget, not like you're managing a real P&L or projects with 100s of STE on. Day to day operations and culture is run by highly bloated, overly politcal, and non-technical or lacking relevant technical skills of far too many Level 6 & 7 staff.

A Great Place to Work - NOT NECESSARILY SO!!!

Pros

Good benefits, including non-vested retirement savings contributions in a 403(b) plan and a decent Horizon BCBS plan.

Cons

It is a highly political atmosphere in which who you know is often more important that what you know. The end-of-year Ratings/Laddering process is highly subjective. Working at one of the small sites is apparently a much inferior experience to working at one of the main campuses in VA or MA, where there is less pressure on employees at any given level. Personally, I found that the company's much heralded work-life balance did not exist at the site where I worked, and there was no recourse to an unexpected, unfair performance evaluation by management (admittedly based on incomplete and inaccurate task information) that created a hostile work environment for me and ultimately led to the loss of my job.
