Pros

As a company MITRE offers many different areas to work in and they encourage people to move around to try work in different domains. Typically most jobs are engineering related but there are opportunities in business, finance and analytics. Early career hires do very well.

Cons

Promotions for senior staff members are few and far between. Compensation is not competitive with industry

Pros

Work-life balance as others note is a big one. I also really like working with a good mix of well-meaning staff. Very few of the back-stabbing, ladder-climbing folks that you find in other workplaces, but I've heard they exist. Luckily I've not had to deal with them. This is a place where junior staff, if they are lucky enough to be selected, can get valuable insights on how government contracting works so that they can leave to gain higher salary elsewhere. And if they plan it right, perhaps they return to MITRE where their experience is rewarded.

Cons

Nothing that you don't experience working elsewhere if the work primarily involves support of the US government, security, sudden project cancellations, not enough funding to pay for the work needed to do it right, etc.
