Pros

People are great. Direct management team is wonderful and spends time communicating although they do not have the ability to make changes.

Cons

No room for growth. Life experience and education not taken into consideration. Promotions based on length of years worked vs. merit, education, and experience. Salary increases less than desirable. Administrative Support staff underappreciated and not noticed. I have seen some administrative support promoted to level four who cannot create a simple technical document or excel spreadsheet. They were promoted because of who they supported vs. their credentials. Experience and education does not play a role in promotions.

Great benefits. No growth on the Corporate side.

Pros

Retirement benefits are excellent! Vacation time is pretty good too, but includes sick days. Good for people who never get sick. Flexibility to occasionally work from home (snow storm, sick child, etc.).

Cons

No career growth on the Corporate side at all! I worked in the same position for 5 and a half years and never received a promotion or any kind of change in assignment despite big promises at the interview. It was not for lack of trying! Big part of the reason why there is no growth is that people stick around forever, which is a testament to the good benefits of the company. There are many people at MITRE who have worked there 20, 30, 40 or even 50 years. Some people just never want to retire, which means that very few positions open up. It also means that adopting new ways of doing things is painfully slow, because "It has always been done this way." Another con is the minimal annual raises, which average around 2% per year.

Pros

Generally flexible about working from home Casual, yet professional work environment Good benefits: though the formula is complicated, capturing the full retirement match means that company contributes 10% of salary and it's with Fidelity so good inexpensive index funds are available. Paid time off accrual rates have gone down recently, but still quite competitive. In general, the company's approach to sick and vacation time is very reasonable and fair.

Cons

HR policies can be rather unimaginitive when it comes to recognizing and correcting internal and external pay equity issues. Approach to budgeting is similar to government; there's always a mad rush at the end of each fiscal year to burn money. Effort is made to do so ethically, but the whole situation inevitably leads to some waste. Very bureaucratic: forms must be filled out to get even simple tasks done.
