Pros

Smart people. Nice facilities. Decent benefits (declined over the years).

Cons

Senior leadership is complete disarray. Poor change management related to new strategy and recent layoffs. Fear filled communications demanding positivity without addressing employee concerns, leading to a brain drain in some areas. Leadership lacks ability to articulate clear vision, gain buy-in and communicate effectively and with passion.

Pros

- Pockets of great, smart people - Pockets of very interesting work - Good work/life balance

Cons

- CEO is condescending, impulsive, and out of touch - Rest of C-suite is oblivious to challenges, insists everything is going great. - Mid-level managers want to help but the issues are too pervasive and getting worse - Gutting benefits for tenured employees and award budgets for high performers - Lots of bad work they pretend is ground breaking and world shifting - Executing the actual good work is nearly impossible with restrictive policies and barebones overhead support for them, especially classified IT - Nonexistent professional development support - Culture of "risk taking" is a lie

Pros

Employees who actually do the work have a strong commitment to national security and working in the public interest. I feel proud of the positive impact MITRE makes as an FFRDC. I’M

Cons

There was a huge re-org with summary firings in 2020, right before the long July 4th weekend and right after we‘d all been sent home for COVID and were trying to figure out the whole work-from-home thing. Great timing! Great example of our corporate value of Grace and Respect! The firings were supposedly to get rid of an excessive amount of upper management, which had some validity, but since then there has been a HUGE influx of VPs, mostly from outside the company with no clue how an FFRDC works. They are the opposite of helpful. Now the upper management is trying to turn us into a commercial enterprise, I can only assume this is so that they will make more money. There are also serious financial issues, which management is not addressing clearly with staff but, guess what, we‘re all engineers, we lead projects and can see the data, we can figure it out! I was shocked that the board extended our CEOs contract. He‘s totally incompetent and should be fired immediately. Before his time there were certainly issues, but he has 100% lost the trust of the staff. We keep getting pop surveys about how we feel about the company, but they NEVER ask for feedback on the exec level, because we all know what that would be. Oddly the all seem to think we adore them so there’s a real disconnect.
