Pros

Opportunity to support the Gov. in an unbiased fashion. Benefits. Ability to easily transfer between internal organizations. Wide breadth and depth of corporate knowledge that is relatively easy to access.

Cons

The mean salaries for the professional ranks (AC ranks) are at best average. The spread of annual salary increases is extremely narrow, i.e. little difference between a bottom performer and a top performer of the same professional rank. There is little monetary incentive to do an outstanding job. Promotions are largely based on 'who you know' as opposed to competence. The management style is very 'old boys club' and rather stodgy. There can be the appearance of conflict of interest in the relationships between upper management and retired Gov. officials as well as between Gov. sponsors and relatives (e.g. spouses) who work at MITRE. The technical supervisory ranks (AC-5 and above) are not given the time nor charge codes to properly manage their staff. They must charge full time to a contract while simultaneously managing staff.

Pros

Sharing, collaboration, expertise. This place reeks of talent and desire, however ..... (see below)

Cons

In the quest to grow (namely CEM, now CCG) we are taking on work that is completely inappropriate. Many of my co-workers are under employed, our sponsors don't get it when it comes to an FFRDC, and the task and portfolio managers seem indifferent to the work we are assigned. MITRE is in real danger here of getting into hot water when the other non-ffrdc contractors get wind of the work we are doing. Me: I'm a glorified note taker and admin assistant, never mind that I have multiple degrees, and I am a PMP. I spend most days doing little valuable work and I've stopped asking the managers to give me work that is going to challenge me. This isn't just me, many of my peers are either resigned to their fate or are actively looking for new work. One five year veteran told me "keep your mouth shut and take the paycheck..." Folks, the train is off the tracks here and it's only a matter of time till the bodies start piling up. If I hear the phrase "....MITRE is doing great FFRDC work that is making an impact " from senior mgmt one more time, I'm going to puke.

Pros

Our technical people are very intelligent and passionate

Cons

The management here is a joke and it's safe to say that no Division Chief, VP, CEO, or anyone else in upper management cares about you at all. In light of recent political events, our nonpolitical company has folded and is deciding to enforce discriminatory and hostile rules on employees. Not only are they censoring our speech in the workplace, but have asked us to carry their policies onto our personal lives. They will pretend to be on your side but they do not have anyone's back but their own. I am disappointed and ashamed to work for a company that is unable to protect and support their people.
