Pros

I generally like the work I do. I wake up every morning not feeling like I am going to "work".

Cons

Leadership. The return to office policy makes absolutely no sense--there are no rooms and this is a nationally based organization that requires people to be on phone calls 90% of the day. Why are we being mandated to sit in an office shared with multiple people on competing phone calls? This is not fostering connects, only lowering employee morale and Sponsor opinion of the organization. I have literally heard of people going out to the parking lot to take calls from their car (if they are so fortunate enough to have one and not travel hours using public transit).

Pros

Meaningful Work, Nice Facilities, Good Worker Bees

Cons

Leaders lack the necessary skills in empowering, appreciating, and fostering the growth of their staff. They exhibit an unwarranted sense of superiority in their roles and are unwilling to entertain any suggestions for improvement, either for themselves or the organization. The prevailing mindset is to conform to their directives as the sole means of survival in that environment. If you seek to make a meaningful impact, it is advisable to explore opportunities in a different organization.

Pros

Traditionally MITRE has been a very stable job where you could work on hard problems for the government outside of the bounds of federal employment. The pay is better than working in government, and the people are highly educated and generally hard working. Also, as a not-for-profit, you can focus on finding the right solutions to government problems without worrying so much about selling your company's products or services.

Cons

As a consulting firm, the same pressures of getting work do apply, and MITRE has traditionally not done as good of a job in working with outside entities or partnering with top organizations, although there is management pressure to do so. In a company of 9000 people, though, it's easy to just think about your skills and your team's potential, and not think about what could be done by partnering with the outside world. That said, if you want to grow at MITRE, you really do have to spend time on work that is not billable to customers, such as writing proposals.
