Pros

Smart people, good mission, interesting work

Cons

I've been at MITRE for less than a year. Between the time I accepted the job offer and my start date, benefits had already been slashed. I was not told by my recruiter. I didn't think anything of it, but benefits kept getting slashed. Then they took away our trash cans. Then they changed the hybrid work policy. All of that would have been more tolerable if it wasn't for the utter contempt upper management seems to have for its employees. They keep lying to us about why these changes are being made. They make disingenuous arguments. For example reframing "return to office" as "return to work" as if remote workers aren't working. Saying removing our trash cans is better for the environment without evidence, and not admitting it's about cutting janitorial staff costs. They claim we're getting more flexibility when they cut 2 holidays and replace it with one "flex" holiday. They claim that keeping layoffs a secret is about "protecting employee privacy." We didn't expect a list of names. Just let us know that our information desk is going to be degraded rather than being surprised by the longer wait times. They hosted a Q&A where no questions were taken. Twice. On another Q&A, they took my question and rephrased it into a different question, instead of reading what I wrote. This is not a comprehensive list. It seems like every week (generally on a Friday afternoon. We see through that trick) something new comes out. And it's never counterbalanced by any good news. We're a bunch of highly-educated data analysts, engineers, developers, and so on. We can handle tough news if presented honestly and factually. The executive team is treating us like middle schoolers.

Pros

- Working with an exceptionally talented technical staff - Mac laptops are offered, which can improve productivity

Cons

- There is an expectation that technical staff search to find new projects they can split their time on to remain fully allocated. If you encounter difficulty doing this then you either get poor assignments or pushed out as there would not be enough assigned work. Those working at remote site locations outside of the main two campuses in Bedford and McLean are likely to encounter more challenges. To mitigate this con, consider starting your MITRE career at one of the two campus locations at least for the first year. - Significant and impactful erosion of benefits during the past year (notably, a benefit was taken away within 3 weeks of starting which partially formed the basis of selecting MITRE) - Remote work policy changed from 1-day/week in the office to 3 or 4-days/week in the office over the past year; however, there are simply not enough offices to accomodate the influx of people. This leads to double or tripling up on offices, which can tank productivity if you're not able to maintain concentration
