Pros

Decent offices, people are nice, and if you like to cruise at work and avoid performance, achievement, or relevance (because that means work), this place is for YOU. MITRE is a terrific place for has-beens, used-to-be-someones, and those who like to say "R&D" but will rarely if ever do any actual R&D, and those allergic to delivery. The best pro is it all "sounds" good without actually BEING good, so its a win-win, right? It's a cheap and easy play to get to nice benefits (retirement bennies are nice - 403b and 401a are sharp, and if you can ever explain how they work outside of maxxing them out to just move past the paperwork and odd math, they'll make you the CEO - I think that's how the current dude got the job). Healthcare used to be good - that now sucks. The education bennies are the best in town, if you can survive the period of servitude that come with it (see the cons on what happens to your skills). MITRE isn't really a business - it's more like a quasi-government stopping point for people who are looking for that old retired-defense-employee feel (I can go to a job site and blather about how it used to be) and yet claim they work for a company. Really, its none of these things...it's the worst of all of them.

Cons

Your future, your value in the workplace, and your ability to achieve and deliver real value will suffer. I met someone in their first year who told me, "I can FEEL my skills weakening when I come here, and I worry that will continue if I stay." I thought she was being dramatic, until by the end of my 1.5 year mark, I felt it as well. By year two, I couldn't shake it, and I tried to see how I could work through it. That lady quit soon after our chat. I made some progress, but to be sure, giant MITRE mediocrity crept in and swept away my progress. There are many, many managers, but scant few leaders. What MITRE used to pride itself on - being a slush-pool for smart people (that also didn't believe in up or out) that the gov't could use is a Cold War long dead dream. The current crop of government leadership have no idea what an FFRDC is or why they should care, why it matters, what it should do, and amazingly, MITRE "leadership" also shares this same problem in itself - they have TOP people still thinking about it...zzzzz...zzzzzz. MITRE wants to be commercial and win work outside gov't, and maybe this is really a "pro" since it will merely hasten its demise, but I'm getting ahead of myself. THAT PART IS FOR ADVICE TO MANAGEMENT.

Pros

The old MITRE, I miss thee. There used to be a culture of investment in employees. Management meant it, too. The talent level also used to be quite high. It's dropping now that we're pushing out people who weren't self-promoters but were world-class experts in their field. Without the old hands to learn from, what's going to motivate the young?

Cons

We've had recent layoffs and firings "for performance" that actually have to do with senior management monitoring people's social media accounts and getting rid of the ones whose political beliefs the managers personally disagree with. A lot of this is people just being horrible because, in the Age of Trump, they can. Although not everything MITRE does is related to the DoD, there's definitely a DoD-driven culture here, and it's only getting worse. Finally, this practice of getting rid of people who are about to retire, or pushing people out when mild disabilities are discovered, is the opposite of what MITRE used to stand for.

Drifting in a sea of chaos........

Pros

Focus on government sponsor and mission, ability to craft your own efforts without much direction or involvement of management. Decent benefits.

Cons

MITRE has been drifting downhill for many years. As the organization has grown it has drifted farther away from the basic mission of an FFRDC. The FFRDC motto of "we tell the government what it needs to hear, not what it wants to hear" has been morphed into "keep the money coming in". People who are self-promoting and say what their management wants to hear are promoted. The management doesn't know how to lead - continued surveys and processes to "incentivize" senior staff are misguided at best. Many senior staff want to coast to retirement out of a sense of futility with MITRE or on the other side of the spectrum - laziness. There is NO ONE to go to in management. My experience has been that Level 7 management is out to protect their turf and their jobs and in many cases to do as little as possible while the Officers are all trying to jockey for position and advancement. Senior staff who have approached them with true concern about the work program, ways MITRE can address significant Government program challenges, or incompetent and lazy superiors have gotten the standard response: fake concern, promises to address the issues, maybe a personal meeting with an Officer, and back to business as usual. The latest attempts at salary manipulation miss the point - the best people are motivated to do the job, yet they are told that they must "prove themselves" to fight for scraps from the table. This further alienates them from the organization. If only we could determine what the "goals" are beyond silly phrases like "the next moonshot". Add to this the notion of “co-Department Heads” which was an attempt to streamline management without reducing the number of managers? That one can’t even pass the laugh test. The Officers, particularly The CEO, should note that when you don't hear from senior people who have been vocal in the past about the good of the organization and the work we do it could be an indication that they have given up and see no purpose in risking the wrath of their superiors for the same old response of inaction.
