Cutting costs. At what cost?

Pros

Work life balance is still a thing with no micromanagement. Finally resending illegal (per the judicial system) vaccination mandates in May. At MITRE, after your initial hire, your career is your destiny. You can pick your sponsor and work but if your sponsor goes away it's on you to find another job.

Cons

Pulling every play from the MBA / Honeywell handbook. They can't legally discriminate on age to cut costs, so they implement policies to discourage older people to stay longer term. Tenure based paid time off was recently cut. Short-term sick time is part of PTO, and recent vacation days were cut; well until they found it was illegal. MITRE only gets select federal holidays and doesn't bank them for the December holidays like other FFRDC's. Benefits are no longer great, just acceptable. This would be fine except the pay is below par. Leadership is delusional and says they have the best out of all FFRDC's; we have the worst. Tried to cover up layoffs that were sent out by email. They were supposed to put everyone under a hush clause, but instead got an email to "log in to workday and accept your termination". Line management had no part in this decision or choosing who to terminate. Forced furloughs this fall for certain staff. Patronizing CEO calls and now a CEO Podcast that is even worse. Raises are normalized. Upwards of 70% of people are grouped as average regardless of performance. To break out above average, it's how much attention you give upper management and help them pad their review. "Grace and Respect" is weaponized at MITRE and used to silence anyone, including terminating whistleblowers or those with a moral compass that points true. This organization, despite what they say, is highly political; and not internal office politics.

Pros

Fresh grads and smart scientists/engineers/programmers who come with tons of enthusiasm and are very smart. A great past legacy that needs to continue.

Cons

Right now, this is a good place for managers/VPs/CEOs with PowerPoint skills rather than worker bees who are passionate about math, science and engineering. MITRE has a high overhead because of multiple layers of management who do not do the actual technical work. If you are a dedicated technical engineer, you will barely see a salary raise. Overtime, this may lead to doing "just enough" to survive or leaving for greener pasture. Because of the high overhead, you could be overloaded with a task (when or if it becomes available), since the layers of managements has to get their cut. A task that should be done fundamentally by two or three engineers is performed by one engineer/scientist. The engineers and scientists don't get recognized for their contributions. This is probably one of the causes for the higher attrition rate. The demand for quick results -- which can lead to low quality work --, and not training engineers, is also a big negative. MITRE wants to publish more quality research, but they do not provide funding or necessary time to do so (overhead issues). Lack of investment in fundamental sciences (Physics, Math) and engineering. Too much focus on the AI hype. Some upper managers seem insecure if engineers want to directly correspond with sponsors. Reward is heavily skewed towards managers with DoD connections who often lack real technical skills.

Pros

Decent pay and experience for those starting in Cyber Security or other technical fields.

Cons

No long term commitment to employees, senior management is expanding adding no value to the sponsors or mission, 'woke' is overtly celebrated 'grace and respect' used to silence any dissent. Management is loosing focus on sponsor work and solving hard problems - technical depth is getting shallow.
