Pros

The work is good and meaningful. Surrounded by lots of smart people.

Cons

The CEO is completely tone deaf. The middle management is great, but the VPs and above are not. They make decisions that hurt morale and benefits, and deliver the news very poorly, treating employees rudely and dodging perfectly legitimate questions. It appears that they're trying recently to encourage more experienced staff to leave the company. Vacation was recently cut by one week for experienced staff, and a furlough was "highly encouraged" but not strictly enforced at Thanksgiving.

Needs better Leadership

Pros

When I first started to work at MITRE (pre-pandemic) there was this emphasis from everyone about work life balance. I was excited about the tuition reimbursement policy and the benefits package was for the most part pretty great (aside from the fact you have to wait 1 year for the company to invest into your 401k).

Cons

Shortly after starting the pandemic hit. During this time finance underwent a transformation of systems which was an absolute nightmare and poorly executed. This resulted in 10 hour days for over 10 months. Senior leadership does not remotely care about you as an employee or about how many hours you have to work to meet the customers needs. Capacity issues rose as HR services failed to fill positions. I am so happy that I left when I did, I have not heard many positive things from anyone in finance since my departure. The finance leadership for the most part was a wonderful group of individuals who were willing to help you grow and achieve new heights until even their plates were too heavy to succeed in their leadership roles.

Good and bad

Pros

Some of the smartest people I've had the pleasure to meet. I learned a lot, and there's a good quantity of curious people that like to learn. People come here from Raytheon and describe it like a breath of fresh air. Had a great boss and made some good friends. Promotions possible if you're buddy-buddy and have someone who fights for you, about like other places in this regard as far as I can tell.

Cons

Politics, reorgs, multiple layers of bosses. Retention is poor especially for younger employees, and it's worse than it has to be partly because of the way performance reviews raises work. People quit their bosses. I had a good department head, and then a reorg shuffled everything around and people with absolutely no leadership experience or chops were in charge. I've learned a lot about how *not* to behave as a leader from working here. If Raytheon is worse than MITRE, I know to stay the hell away from there. Very academic environment. Little drive to support the mission. Many people are burned out and in denial about it.
