Pros

Thoughtful colleagues with excellent academic credentials Leadership promotes collaboration No organizational firewalls Training opportunities Strategic engagements--ability to develop ideas internal and with customers True work life balance

Cons

Low performers allowed to stick around too long at all levels Opportunities for more junior staff can be limited due to consulting nature of work and limited business development Staff can get too wrapped up in FFRDC mission and neglect actually helping the customer

MITRE losing it way

Pros

as an FFRDC (actually a holding company for multiple FFRDCs), MITRE _should_ appeal to technologists who are willing to sacrifice top-end wages for a job where they can have an impact (bad taste word when it comes to MITRE's FAA sponsor :-)) on government programs. opps, that doesn't sound all that "pro".

Cons

Under CEO Al Grasso and his push for "business" in non-DoD "customers", in the opinion of many MITRE employees, MITRE has lost it way. Now it is unlikely that a manager would walk away from "non-MITRE work". Has MITRE become just another Beltway Bandit? Sadly, the answer seems to be yes, unless Grasso chooses founding principles over his "lunch bunch"'s desire to follow in the footsteps of former CEO Barry "The Barry" Horowitz (sp?).

Pros

Opportunities to do important work. Great access to the data you need to really understand the problem. Smart co-workers. Don't come here if you want to get rich. Don't come here for training. Come here if you already know your stuff, and want to make a difference. The good jobs are high stress, but management bends over backwards to help with work-life balance.

Cons

Some of the managers are egotistical turf-guarders with tunnel vision. They tend to be the ones that have job openings. You may have to transfer internally a couple of times in your first two years to get yourself into a good spot.
