Pros

Keep a happy face and you'll be fine. Go along and get along is easy enough. Great if you like constant change and highly "dynamic" environments. As a manager, you will not be held accountable if you are modestly clever.

Cons

MITRE doesn't pay competitively for some sites; site work is just that work any other contractor is likely to handle. MITRE doesn't maintain "differentiation" as its core values would lead you to believe. No longer refuses work that isn't "MITRE work". Very limited capability to perform middle-management functions, while counter-intuitively being very top heavy in senior personnel. Poor communication and flexible ethics can be found in some parts of MITRE.

Pros

Good work environment. Super people to work with. I've found working level folks to be very cooperative and eager to share their knowledge and experience. In some groups you are able to state the obvious that might not be what the customer wants to hear.

Cons

Upper management is more than a little sanctimonious about how good MITRE is and how we work in the public interest then turn around and become absolutely obsequious. They spend too much time coming up with names like "idea leaders" and to little time telling the truth.

Pros

Very good benefits. If you are a graybeard, MITRE has an unusually large percentage of people who are subject matter experts with 25+ years of experience, so no age discrimination. They also have a lot of the more common less experienced younger people. MITRE is always very highly rated by Fortune magazine and other ranking sources, including this web site.

Cons

MITRE is a "Principal Engineer" company -- meaning that all the real work is done by people from entry level up to Principal Engineer. Once you reach Sr. Principal Engineer, you are expected to do a lot of management stuff, which is OK if you are into that sort of work. MITRE is the world's most process-oriented company -- meaning that they do a huge amount of work developing processes of all kinds for the government. I suppose someone has to do it, but don't confuse that with real technical work. If you want to go somewhere and be invisible and stay until you retire or die, that's easy at MITRE.
