      Good benefits, people skills required for promotions at higher levels.

      Pros

      Great if you're interested in serving the public interest. Also has great benefits, making the total compensation a little higher than the average company. The pace is not demanding, and working for the government is relatively stable.

      Cons

      There seems to be a divide between management and technical staff (with the exception of Ph.Ds concentrating on research). Promotions for engineering and technical skills are hard to come by. People skills seem more important to get promotions at the higher levels.

      Pros

      Ability to work in the public interest on critical national security issues with full support of management to "do the right thing." At MITRE the only interest is the public interest.

      Cons

      As a not for profit organization, while your are paid a competitive salary, there are no stock options or bonuses as can be seen in some other high tech companies (eg. Google...)
