Lack of grace and respect

Pros

Great co-workers, great projects, great lower-level managers (tech director and department manager).

Cons

CEO and SVPs are so disconnected from MITRE mission and MITRE employees it's laughable. The C-suite doesn't think things through. They made Labor Day a "flex holiday" only to find out that was illegal where the corporate headquarters are. They were dismissive of the impact that reducing number of holidays and PTO for long-term employees who were told to "research it". Research shows the company is worse than peer companies - or average at best. They don't answer the hard questions in all-hands. Employees are scared to ask hard questions for fear of hostile response. C-Suite claims to value diversity (to the point of being called woke by some employees). They don't actually do anything about it except ineffective training videos. I&D budgets were slashed showing how much they value diversity. Managers were given hiring goals over the last few years - ill-considered ones given how many staff are now struggling to find work. Layoffs have happened - most recent one notified people via email. More layoffs expected. Most of the senior staff saw this coming. No one in C-suite seemed to. Senior staff are leaving at an alarming rate.

Pros

MITRE has historically supported the most critical missions in the nation’s defense, intelligence, and other civilian sectors. For more than 50 years it was the place to work if you wanted to do the right thing for the right reasons. The compensation and work life balance were excellent. They covered the costs of postgraduate degrees. They have a competitive internal R&D program that produced some good outcomes for the nation. All-in-all, over the 20 years I worked there, I loved my job and serving my nation. I expected to work there for another 20 years.

Cons

In around 2017, MITRE got a new CEO, who is sinking the ship. The organization became woke. Before that it had weaknesses typical of the tech sector: management that couldn’t lead, leaders that can’t lead, and a struggle to balance compensation and retention of talent. However, the pandemic brought out the worst of MITRE. When Biden wrote the vaccine edict, MITRE was overzealous to implement it. Most who submitted religious or medical exemptions were summarily fired without explanation, appeal, or recourse. Hundreds of people were fired, quit, or retired earlier than planned. Since then MITRE has gone downhill.

BS to move ahead

Pros

Work-life balance, still some smart people working.

Cons

Most people who work here have no practical experience, therefore, they BS their way through project to project and are promoted. Many of the promoted people cannot deliver except wordy excuses. While the company boasts of doing great, raises do not reflect either that or recent crazy cost of living increases.
