Pros

After about 3 positions, they begin to recognize high potential and put you on a career development program. Also, there are a lot opportunities to advance laterally between corporate buying and in-store management. I'm told that it is important to know both in order to advance successfully in the long run.

Cons

It takes 3 whole positions before they recognize high potential. Hitting the ground running or advancing quickly from the start is impossible. There is an initial period of about 2 years where responsibilities come slowly and the work is "task-driven".

Pros

Number one is the San Francisco store is convenient to local transportation. Second is that they have a generous vacation policy, at least for employees who've been there for a while, not sure if the policy has changed. Employee discount is nice, especially when the periodically increase it, though they've lowered that too. It seemed like a secure job, but who knows this year.

Cons

The company has a politically charged atmosphere, it's not enough to perform your work and responsibilities well, you have to kiss the right butt and watch your back. There is a total disregard for lower employees by management, it's palpable. Once many cross the line into management, they feel superior and act condescending. The worse they are, the more they get rewarded. Ever since Federated took over, the associates and support staff have been treated worse and worse, until they're reduced to part time automatons. There used to be a lot of pride working for this company but it's long gone.

Pros

Discounts and fairly nice co-workers. Use to be a better place to work as Rich's before Macy's took over. Probably ok for seasonal position but avoid permanent position at all costs.

Cons

Poor management, little advancement opportunities, inflexible schedule, low wages, no stability. Staff turn around extremely high on the order of 3 or 4 times a year for one position. Longer term employees have mostly left, virtually completely different management from a year ago. Little resources to actually do your job correctly. Non-existent benefits or vacation for largely part-time staff.
