Work-Life Balance vs. Ambition

Pros

The perks and work-life balance are pretty fantastic. The culture is laid-back and most people are approachable and willing to help. The recent boom in hiring means there are many young people (which some like and some don't). Your experience here can be highly dependent on your manager. I have been lucky in that aspect.

Cons

The company, being process-oriented, takes metrics a bit too seriously. Metrics can be good guidelines to measure performance but they should not be taken as absolute truth. I have seen many people absorbed by meeting their metrics, thereby sacrificing the efforts they could have actually used to get things done. Since the company is slow-paced and risk-averse, sometimes the lack of motivation and ambition can be discouraging. This, combined with the less-than-average pay for a software company, contributes to many bright people escaping the company. Your experience here can be highly dependent on your manager. Others have not been lucky in that aspect.

Pros

401k match works out to be dollar for dollar. Medical is excellent, not a cut throat environment.

Cons

Company is riding success of one product, the mat lab platform. It's an excellent piece of software but after several yrs of no growth, same product, and little input to decision making, it gets tedious. Be careful that you get trapped and stay for life which is what most people do that are lacking confidence to try something new. Salespeople, managers have been there forever.

Good and Not so good

Pros

Good location, nice campus and office facilities, free cookies on Fridays and Breakfast on Wednesday, Summer family outing. Benefits and 401k profit share are good Good work-life balance A pleasure to work with nice and very smart colleagues

Cons

1. Beware the annual review process. The best way to describe it is draconian and demoralizing. 2. No opportunity to grow or advance. Careers die here. 3. You get 3 work at home days so choose carefully! They are intended to be used for staying home with a sick child, bad weather (hurricane/snow), waiting for a repairman, etc... 4. Weak and uninspiring management. Lots of cronyism.
